PROCEDURE FOR TERMINATED PREGNANCY

OUR CLINIC AND OUR UNIQUE COMMUNITY AND FEMINIST APPROACH

Some pregnancies cannot be carried to term for various reasons (miscarriage, blighted ovum (anembryonic pregnancy), genetic abnormalities, fetal malformations). We know that having to terminate a pregnancy is a difficult time in a family’s life.

If the professional following your pregnancy recommends an intervention to manage a miscarriage or a termination, our team will welcome you with the caring and empathy needed during these moments.

Our team has only one objective: to ensure a safe intervention in a caring environment and in accordance with the values of the CSFM.

TWO METHODS

Depending on your situation and your gestational age, we offer two types of interventions:

  • Procedural intervention: this is done at the CSFM, in one appointment, lasting 2 to 3 hours.

IMPORTANT: Please note that certain medical conditions may contraindicate an outpatient procedure. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, a heart problem or a clotting problem, please mention it when you book your appointment. If you have any concerns or questions, discuss them when you make your appointment. If the doctor feels it would be safer to perform the procedure in a hospital setting, our staff can help you arrange an appointment.

  • Medical intervention : two drugs are taken. The first drug, mifepristone, is taken at the CSFM. It stops the evolution of the pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken at home, no more than 24 to 48 hours later. It triggers expulsion of the pregnancy.
Preparing for your appointment
  • Plan to be at the CSFM for 2 to 3 hours. If your appointment requires more time, we will advise you in advance.
  • Only one appointment is required, regardless of the type of procedure you choose.
  • Bring your health insurance card, PFSI paper or photo ID.
  • Bring the ultrasound report indicating the diagnosis of arrested pregnancy (or other diagnosis). You may also send it to us by email or fax.
  • You do NOT have to fast
  • Plan to be accompanied: you will not be able to drive a car for the 24 hours following your appointment (for procedural intervention only).
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring a menstrual protection
  • There’s no designated parking, so plan to arrive a little early (note that Avenue Mont-Royal is closed during the summer).
The appointement
Procedural intervention
    • When you arrive, you’ll be given forms to complete. Afterwards, you will meet with a nurse who will explain how the procedure will be carried out.
    • The procedure will last about ten minutes. Please note that for safety reasons, you cannot be accompanied during the procedure.
    • We may need to repeat an ultrasound prior to the procedure. If you would like an image, we can provide you with one.
    • After the procedure, you will rest for 30-60 minutes in the recovery room. The person accompanying you can be with you during this time. Please note that only one person at a time can be at your bedside.
    • During this time, a nurse will ensure your comfort and monitor your vital signs.
By medication (up to 10 weeks)
    • When you arrive, you’ll be given forms to complete. Afterwards, you will meet with a nurse who will explain how the medications work.
    • You will then meet the doctor.
    • We may need to repeat an ultrasound prior to the procedure. If you would like an image, we can provide you with one.
    • There will be 2 medications to take:
        • The 1st is mifepristone, which will initiate the detachment of the pregnancy from the uterus. There are few or no side effects to this medication.
        • 24-48 hours later you will have to take misoprostol tablets, which will trigger the expulsion of the pregnancy.
    • We will schedule a follow-up telephone appointment with a nurse 2 weeks later.
Post procedure care
  • Before your departure, we will provide you with a brochure containing all the information you need.
  • No face-to-face follow-up appointments required
  • If you have any concerns about your health, a nurse is available to answer your questions Monday to Friday during CSFM business hours.
  • If the nurse deems that you requires medical follow-up, you will be given a follow-up appointment at the CSFM as soon as possible.
  • You’ll have to take a urine pregnancy test 4 weeks later, to make sure your body has eliminated the pregnancy hormones.
There’s no need to do it before then, as the test will probably be positive.
